This diet was inspired by Professor Tim Noakes and his success with the principles of a low carb - high fat diet. I had spent most of 2012 closely following his work, reading the books he had read and immersing myself in the science around sugar, fats and carbs in the diet. Initially my interest was personal. As an avid cyclist, I had battled my weight tendencies for many years and had finally made a breakthrough using Professor Noakes' principles.
Sometime in late 2012 I went to listen to the Prof speak and while chatting to him after his lecture, he thanked me for my interest and asked me to help spread the word about the diet. I took this to mean to make more people aware of the dangers of sugar and refined carbohydrates, the value of reverting to a high fat diet and in some way combating the tsunami of diabetes and its disastrous health consequences engulfing our world.
I quickly realized that I had underestimated the depth of interest people had, not only in losing weight but also in their long-term health. Initially people asked for a some basic instructions to follow. This started as an email with bullet points, which then grew into a large Word document. Then I realized that because of my experience in the web, I had the tools to really make a difference.
So the email that became a Word document, migrated onto the web and became The DecarbDiet dot com!
