What are Legumes?

Legumes are plants with seeds or fruits that split into two along a seam. This opening along a specific line or place is called dehise.

Foods from the legume family include:

  • beans
  • peas
  • lentils
  • peanuts
  • soybeans
  • alfalfa

Legumes are excellent sources of carbohydrates and are best not consumed in large qualities if you are looking to avoid high carb sources.

Grain legumes are grown for their seeds these include beans, peas, lentils and peanuts.
